The first bike ride up the Taff Trail for a while and it brought me out in the small town of Caerphilly (no its not a disease!) I hadn’t actually been to Caerphilly Castle since school days (yep it’s gotta be about 20 years since my last visit there!)
Initially I felt totally dis-orientated as I couldn’t work out which angle I had approached it from or where the shopping centre and town centre had vanished to! But first up there was a great vantage point straight at the end of the bicycle trail where a lot of birds were getting fed by the numerous passers-by whom were visiting the castle and shopping in the town centre.
The vast area the Castle actually covers is much much bigger than I remember and could it be one of the biggest in Europe?
But I still do vividly remember the angled tower which leans more than the Tower of Pisa – but it’s still unclear why it’s leaning like it does!
The town has certainly been given a bit of a makeover recently with tourists coming from around the world to visit Caerphilly (well just the castle really but they were stopping by the town aswell!) And No! I couldn’t recommend a decent restaurant for you Yanks to eat at in Caerphilly! I did spy a Greggs that might suffice though! 😉
Overlooking the Castle was a statue paying tribute to Caerphilly-born comedian Tommy Cooper (most people don’t even know he’s Welsh – let alone from Caerphilly!) Proudly he stands on the town corner looking over proceedings, with a rabbit at his feet and a magicians hat and wand in his hands.
Considering it was mid-week and the weather wasn’t amazing I was totally surprised how busy the Castle area and town actually were. I may decide to take another un-planned trip to Caerphilly soon and if I do it will be ‘Just like that’…….well I had to get that line in somewhere!
