I can never make my mind up whether things of this nature are news-worthy due to the act of perpetuating the people who carry out these actions. (I suppose graffiti has been of a similar vein over the years but without any major axe to grind – but perceptions can change!)
For the last few years there has been a group of people taking over and squatting in properties around Cardiff – you may have seen banners and graffiti at vacant pubs in Clifton Street and Mount Stuart Square, the Spin/Gaeity on City Road and also some vacant WRU offices on Westgate Street?
The latest building that squatters took over was the now redundant police station in Canton on Cowbridge Road East.
Banners and graffiti began appearing on the distinctive structure at the start of August with some of the banners reading:-
“Less cops, more squats.”
“Against police repression.”
“Police brutality sucks.”
These banners seem to change on a weekly basis with the term ACAB appearing quite a lot. I always assumed this stood for ‘All cops are bas****s’ but it seems it can also stand for ‘Antagonistic Collective Against Boredom‘
According to online reports it seems that the baliffs successfully removed the squatters from the police station on Friday 23rd August – there was still evidence of broken glass on the floor!
Within 24 hours of the squatters being removed all the windows and doors were being secured whilst people from the area carried on with their normal day to day business.
There is a ‘High Court Writ of Possession’ notice displayed on the front of the building – interesting reading!
I think the last photo may sum everything up……
