Set in the leafy Cardiff suburb of Rhiwbina – is the Beulah Church Community Centre and a piece of street art that I just would not expect to see in this part of Cardiff or on this type of building!
The side of the community centre offers a huge blank canvas and someone has taken advantage and stencilled on Jesus on a scooter! (it looks like he’s really enjoying it!) Fully black in colour with only the wheels of the scooter in brown.
On further investigation it seems The Beulah United Reformed church has been working with artist Jo Jones and graphic designer Bleddyn Edwards to create a series of images of Jesus’ life on the outside of the church hall since 2011. Here is one taken by Walt Jabsco in June 2011. (Thanks Walt)
On the church itself is now a poster confirming that the artwork is part of the church and under the heading ‘GRAFFITI JESUS’ there is the line:-
Become like children:
Free in the Spirit.
Street art for Pentecost.
Further along the wall and there is more artwork this time featuring a child pointing towards Jesus on that scooter and also some birds flying in between them.
You may be wondering – ok I can deal with Jesus having a go on a scooter but why on earth is he wearing a bobble hat??
Well each year there is the Rhiwbina Festival and this year as part of it they decided to Yarnbomb certain parts around the village.
