PHOTOS – Supermoon over Cardiff

It’s a phenomenom that doesn’t occur THAT often and it’s even less common for me to be up at 4am in the morning to coincide with what has been called a Supermoon

The ‘Supermoon’ effect is caused when the moon reaches the closest point in it’s elliptical orbit around Earth and hits the peak of it’s full phase. The whole of the disc of the moon is illuminated and is surely the biggest, brightest full moon of the year.

When photographed near the horizon ‘Supermoons’ can be 15% larger than normal, 20% brighter and are a real treat for photography enthusiasts.

I was totally unprepared for this early morning shoot and literally stuck my camera out of the window and snapped away in various modes and settings until I found one that captured what I could actually see with the naked eye.

I literally only had a couple of minutes before the moon passed behind some tv aerials and chimney pots before disappearing behind a row of houses – I also had to quickly disappear and venture into work!

Things I learnt from this? Mainly to use a tripod, never shoot light sources through double glazed windows, never shoot through dirty double glazed windows, use suitable settings on the camera and most of all BE PREPARED!
