CCFC – Fred Keenor Statue unveiling

An £85,000 statue of Bluebird’s legend Fred Keenor has been unveiled at the Cardiff City Stadium to commemorate Cardiff City’s 1927 FA Cup winning captain. (the only time the famous trophy has been taken out of England when Cardiff beat Arsenal 1-0)

The Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust launched a campaign in April 2010 to help raise £85,000 for the statue with the fans, the club and a whole host of other supporters getting behind the appeal.

Various events were held including charity football matches, bucket collections and people taking part in marathons.

Other major donations came from:-

Cardiff City Council £15,000
Welsh Government £5,000
CCFC/FAW £14,000

Hundreds of City fans turned up outside Gate 3 at the Cardiff City Stadium prior to the Bluebirds’ game at home to Hull City and watched the statue being unveiled by Caral Shore and Yassin Mohamed, both pupils from Fred’s old school.

Cardiff City fans chose a design by local artist Roger Andrews, from Llantwit Major, who created the 9ft bronze statue which proudly stands of a 5ft plinth.

Does anyone know why the statue was wrapped in a Welsh Dragon flag rather than a Bluebird’s flag or even the St David’s flag?

Before the unveiling people spoke from the Supporters Trust whom were instrumental in the project before Lord Neil Kinnock gave a rousing speech that didn’t require a microphone – he could be heard echoing around the carpark!
At one point, Kinnock said “this statue has been made possible by the ordinary people who support Welsh football and Cardiff City”, which summed it up.
The string was pulled to reveal the bronze figure clutching the Fa Cup with pride and punching his fist in the air.

Some cheers, a round of applause and a spontaneous rendition of ‘Bluebirds, Bluebirds’ was heard after the unveiling.
