Cardiff Half Marathon

Sunday 14th October is the date for the 2012 Cardiff Half Marathon. This year taking a totally new route which does actually run the full 13.1 miles (unlike 2010’s route which was a bit short!)

This year beginning outside Cardiff Castle, down around Cardiff Bay then back up via the City Centre then a loop of Roath Park before heading back to the City Hall. (Sounds easy yeah?)
Race organisers have decided to mark the London 2012 Olympics games by raising entry numbers to 20,012.

If anyone is reading this and thinking “Lee doing a marathon?? Is he mad?
Then I totally agree!!!

I haven’t been the most athletic person over the last 20 years (maybe the fastest to down a pint of beer, or the fastest to dash down Caroline Street) but I now feel it’s my turn to give something back.

Yep I’ve stupidly agreed to take part in the 2012 Cardiff Half Marathon (oh I must’ve been drunk to agree to this!)

Having recently lost 5 stone in weight and beginning an exercise regime it was time for me to actually enter this year’s marathon and take part rather than experiencing it just as a spectator!

Last year’s Cardiff Half Marathon photos I took can be viewed here:-

So the weight has been lost, the training has begun – where now the only outstanding issue was sponsorship.
Who’s going to want to sponsor me? What’s the story? How can I convince people?

Some of my family members, friends and work colleagues have been affected by cancer over recent years and I wanted to support a much smaller locally based charity so have opted for Cardiff based cancer charity Tenovus.
Here’s a quick whistle-stop tour of the history of Tenovus:-

In 1943, Tenovus was founded by ten businessmen. Initially, the charity funded a wide range of projects in the local area.

In the 1960s, Tenovus embarked on a project which was to influence their work for the next 40 years.

Tenovus built the Tenovus Institute for Cancer Research in Cardiff which carried out vital research into the causes of cancer.

Since then, Tenovus have concentrated efforts on cancer and are now recognised for their pioneering work.

So i’m not going to play any Coldplay music, i’m not going to tell you an agonising story, or detail the fight people have had against cancer – as we have all had some experience with it and know how devastating it can be.

So all I ask is that you show your support for other people going through the effects of cancer and pledge your support in helping Tenovus continue their hard work that they have proudly done over the last 50 years.

I appreciate that you may know loads of other people that are taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon but I hope you consider sponsoring me and help raise money for local cancer charity Tenovus – my donation page is located at:-
