The Royal Mail has decided to issue a set of stamps commemorating each Gold medal winner at the London 2012 Olympic games this year but more interestingly they have also decided to paint a Royal Mail postbox gold in the hometown of each winner.
As Geraint Thomas was part of the winning Cycling Pursuit team who won a gold medal – the postbox on Castle Street opposite Cardiff Castle was painted gold early on Saturday 4th August, 2012.
Cardiff postman Lars Kihlberg began painting the postbox around 8am covering up the traditional red postbox.
For some reason it seemed to take longer than expected due to the paint being a bit thinner than required to get a good covering over that striking red.
Quite a crowd gathered to witness the event with many photographers and media capturing this momentus event.
Whilst others just wandered on past totally oblivious to what piece of history was being marked!
As the Great British team looks set to exceed expectation in the medal table and blow away the tally obtained in Beijing – The Royal Mail have now created a special Golden Post Box finder so people know exactly where they are!
It located at the handy URL of http://www.goldpostboxes.com/
A few days later after the post box had been painted and the London 2012 Olympics games had finished – Geraint Thomas actually took a visit to see the post box in all it’s glory complete with help from a little friend aswell.
This is what he tweeted on his visit:-
