PUBS-Farewell to The Vulcan

Whilst everything around it has rapidly changed there was always one blot* on the ever-changing landscape of Cardiff. * Inthemindofthegreedydevelopers

In my eyes not really a blot but a distinguished difference encapsulating the history of a now-lost Cardiff – which is now located on quite a lucrative piece of land on the ever-sprawling City Centre area. (Who could imagine that the City Centre was once row after row of terraced houses!?)

The Vulcan Pub, CardiffAfter many fights, campaigns and much deliberation between owners, developers and beer drinkers it has now been decided that former-owners Brains are allowing Cardiff’s oldest pub, The Vulcan, to be demolished.

But alas, it will be painstakingly dismantled brick by brick to be later rebuilt at The Welsh Natural History Museum in St Fagans.

Campaigners have been running the website Save The Vulcan since the pub was under threat in 2009 and gained many fans including James Dean Bradfield, Lord Kinnock, Rhys Ifans, Nick Clegg and Jeremy Vine.

For the last ten years The Vulcan has sat all alone on Adams Street (Adamsdown) whilst new developments have sprung up all around the vintage pub – but now with only car parks and the pub remaining it was only time before this pub was going to be removed!

Scaffolding has been erected and work has begun to dismantle the 159 year old pub which could take many months to complete.
Gracing one side of the pub is an old Guiness sign – I love the symbolic blue cracks appearing throughout the wall.
PS Why is the aerial pointing at the Mendip transmitter?

For some reason stickers have began appearing on the boarded up front window. These were originally on the un-used garage opposite as part of the Wales Biggest Sticker Combo but have now made their way across the road!

Loving the sentiment of the last picture – such a shame to see it go since being on that site since 1853. (no not the sticker!!)

So a sorry end to a traditional city centre boozer but some may call it progress, others corporate greed, but as a pure business decision I feel an amicable solution has been found.
Cardiff’s history IS disappearing before our eyes and I’m sure another tower block of flats/carparks/offices will be built here to fit in with the ever changing landscape. All this change, building, developments – it’s enough to drive you to drink…..if only there was a pub nearby….

  1. Hello! Nice post. Such a shame. We’ve just put up some photos of The Vulcan Hotel back in 2006 before the demolition of the surrounding (ugly) buildings and stopping up of Garth and Taff Streets, for anyone who’s interested… http://www.ilovesthediff.com/adamstreet

  2. Great read on that post! Such a shame I never saw it as interesting enough to take photos back then!

Everyone have a click on http://ilovesthediff.com/adamstreet and see what The Vulcan was like a few years back!

  3. Quality reporting – have you ever considered a job in local news ever…???

    • Noone else would’ve reported the aerial pointing at the incorrect transmitter! These journos today just don’t know what is important anymore! 😉
