A Typomap is a collection of cleverly designed set of maps consisting of countries, cities, seas, and all other topography made out of typeface letters. So essentially :-
Typographic + Map = TypoMap
Here is a famous example that has already been made and gave me the inspiration to create one for my home city of Cardiff.

This then brought up it’s own problems – where is the boundary of Canton? Does Trelai actually exist? Are places like Maendy and Mynachdy part of Gabalfa? How far does Cardiff spread now – it may include Radyr but are Tongwynlais and Pentyrch within the boundary? So many questions and I’ve had a good guess at them all. I’m sure people will have views on places included and NOT included. It’s still work in progress and I can easily tweak it if need be.
A city’s boundaries are not that recognisable compared to the outline of a country and so as such I’m not sure whether it works as well as it could. I might have to try another one featuring the Counties of Wales next and see if that creates a more visually obvious structure to the design.
Here are two other versions but it’s interesting to see that when I zoomed out a bit and emphasised the red colours – Cardiff becomes a heart shape! I really do loves the ‘diff!
And now you know all about the places within Cardiff – try taking the quiz below to see if you can name them all of them in under 10 minutes! It’s a lot harder than you think.

That’s great Lee – print some of them on canvas and flog them at a street market!
Looks like someone else has come up with that idea Rich! 😉
Obviously taken a bit more effort in font selection but essentially THIS idea!
