FOOTBALL-Cardiff City v Crystal Palace

Another year in the life of Cardiff City football club and another big tournament final – their first ever time reaching the final of the Carling Cup. Cardiff City saw off Premiership opposition Blackburn in late November and then Crystal Palace were drawn for them to play next in the semi-finals.

After conceeding a goal on the away-leg at Crystal Palace it was time for City to host the second leg at the Cardiff City Stadium. City needed at least one goal to be in with a chance of progressing and LUCKILY an own goal from Anthony Gardner drew City level. And that’s where the score stayed for ninety minutes and beyond into extra time. Statistics show that Cardiff had the lion’s share of possession and were the better team on the pitch having over 20 chances at goal – some going just wide and others hitting the woodwork! It felt as if we were doing all the hard work but getting nowhere! Was this building up to be another disappointment?

So after the extra period proved goaless it was time to goto the penalty shootout. Cardiff got off to a shaky start with Miller totally missing his penalty but cooly Conway, Gestede and Whittingham put Cardiff 3-1 ahead and into the final at Wembley!
Luckily we pulled through, kept our nerve and finished Palace off with 3-1 in the penalty shoot out! Seems a bit odd that we have got to the Carling Cup final but didn’t actually score any goals in the last two games!

A passionate crowd took to the pitch to help celebrate the good news with City players running around celebrating too. (Some call it a pitch invasion but it wasn’t THAT bad was it?) This iconic image of the players celebrating Cardiff City going to Wembley made the front page of The South Wales Echo too. Ex-Cardiff City players, other footballers and celebrities took to pass on their congratulations on Twitter.

Over at the Cardiff City Message Board members have been posting true facts about City player Peter Whittingham – following in the same vein as #SamWarburtonFacts where everyone is hoping that Whittingham can single-handedly beat Liverpool on February 26th at Wembley in the Carling Cup final! Here’s a selection of the best (thanks guys!)

Dr Nick Riviera – Peter Whittingham’s left foot is so cultured that it gets ALL the jokes in an Alain de Botton column.
BlueArmy 86 – Whitts is so ahead of his time, he lost his virginity before his dad.
Cardiff Giant – Peter Whittingham’s left foot can impregnate a woman from 35 yards.
Nosnia – Every year all Christian celebrate the greatness that is Peter Whittingham on Whitt Sunday.
Robin Friday’s Ghost – Former Manchester United and England star David Beckham is only half as good a player as Peter Whittingham and is, in fact, sometimes described as a “half-Whitt”.
dai_taff – Peter Whittingham has never kicked a ball, the ball runs like feck before his foot gets there.
Canton Massive! – Peter Whittingham doesn’t sleep….he waits!
Colonel Cardiffi – The top corner of every goalmouth in the world is actually classed as a landlocked sovereign city-state called Stato della CittĂ  del Whittingham. It has it’s own currency and postal system.
severncity – Owls never blink, they want to be like Whitts. In fact owl language has the word “Whitt” as it’s main verb, like “to be” in English.
dai_taff – Peter Whittingham has two left testicles
Dr Nick Riviera – Peter Whittingham is so cool under pressure, cucumbers often use the term ‘cool as a whittingham’ #whittsfacts
