“On Friday 15 April 1971, at precisely 3.45pm, the first ever Chapter board meeting was held and our constitution was signed. During the coming 12 months we’re programming a series of special events to celebrate 40 years at the forefront of the European cultural scene; 40 years of creating and presenting groundbreaking, internationally acclaimed work in cinema, theatre and the visual arts; 40 years as a cultural hub, a meeting place of ideas, a safe and open space for creative minds.” – Chapter Programme April 2011.
So 40 years young and even the sun had decided to come out and help the hundreds of people enjoy the celebrations all weekend long at Chapter Arts Centre in Canton. The weekend festivities even included a children’s street party, live music and cabaret performances, a 70s disco and special birthday versions of Chapter favourites.
We thoroughly enjoyed the stalls in the converted carpark where local sellers promoted their goods like Elly Mental Jewellery and I Loves The ‘Diff to name a few.
Around 4pm on Sunday afternoon the crowd all joined in a rendition of ‘Happy Brithday Chapter’ before more beer and food were consumed in the beaming sunshine.
Moving inside for the regular (i use that term loosely!) Sunday night edition of Scrabble Sunday! It’s as simple as turn up, grab a board, drink some beer and make some rude words. Eating Peak Frean Custard Creams is entirely optional.
