It was Tuesday 27th December, straight after the Christmas period, and the annual festive race meeting at Ffos Las was on. The previous week’s weather had hampered conditions which resulted in the Boxing Day Cheptow fixture being postponed but better conditions out West meant the day’s event were still on – even after many inspections.
We left a very snowy and icy Cardiff at 10am (after a slap up breakfast and a pint!) and headed along the M4 via Llanelli to the racecourse at Trimsaran. Leaving the wintry conditions behind in Cardiff- there was little evidence of the cold snap from Bridgend over to Carmarthenshire! Not a single drop of snow or icicle in sight! The racecourse is set in a valley with alledgelly hills all around – but all we could see was the thick mist that surrounded the racetrack!
We arrived at a very wet racecourse around midday and joined the many thousands of spectators whom had made a similar trip to brave the conditions. Most of the spectators were made up of people from West Wales, Swansea and Cardiff but we even got chatting to some that had travelled from as far a field as Birmingham for the race meeting!
We were all very impressed with the facilities on offer, the parade ring, the grandstand and the drinking marquees! Horses were orderly paraded in the wet conditions.
So the crowd were all geared up for an entertaining and exciting race card – and they werent disappointed by the races or the conditions. I ended up backing THREE winners and it certainly more than paid for the day out!
We headed out from the beer marquee a few times to watch the races but due to the weather we couldnt really see much else of the race course apart from directly in front of us! Even trying to follow the coverage on the big screen was difficult as even the cameras struggled to find the horses aswell!
There was a designated play area for children, with a playground, makeup artists and also some festive donkeys aswell. (At least I didnt bet any donkeys at this meeting – for once!)
cool i like it
