At long last Cardiff City’s Boxing Day fixture wasnt against Plymouth but infact Coventry City at home. Kick off was also a bit later than normal at 3pm. This prolonged cold snap didnt put many off with the official attendance being just under 25,000. Rumour has it though that possibly only 19,000 turned up due to icy roads and generally poor driving conditions!
Those that did turn up were in for a treat as Cardiff seemed to be the better of the two teams in the first half. Olofinjana converted Bellamy’s low cross after the home captain burst past Richard Keogh from Andy Keogh’s free kick. Coventry goalkeeper, Westwood, twice denied Michael Chopra with superb saves in the space of 10 minutes as Cardiff’s free-flowing attacking play continued to cause all sorts of problems.
Craig Bellamy was immense on the pitch and was really head and shoulders above every other player in The Championship. Bellamy got himself back into the action and let loose his shot, a wicked deflection off James McPake giving the unfortunate Westwood no chance. There was raptures of applause only to be silenced when we thought one of the linesmen flag was raised – but luckily sense prevailed and the goal was given.
Coventry goalkeeper, Westwood, had an amazing game and was on hand to deny Bellamy a second goal soon afterwards, but it was not enough to stop Cardiff City from gaining their second win in the last eight matches since mid November! Cant remember whether Bellamy or Keogh got Man of the Match mind! (Westwood deserved it for some amazing saves for Coventry and Bellamy for stunning play for Cardiff!)
