After catching some of the Cardiff 10k Marathon earlier in the day it only seemed fair to venture out and actually do some exercise myself.
The sun was shining and it seemed only natural to get out on the bike and cycle up the Taff Trail and experience some of the natural delights that Cardiff has to offer. I used to do this route at least twice a week whilst dieting but due to the weather, work and time permitting I havent actually done this route at all this year! (Shame on me!)
I couldnt make my mind up whether it was me or the bike that was a bit rusty – but a few minutes in and i seemed to have found my stride and enjoyed a pleasant (but not too taxing) ride up the Taff Trail.
Coming towards Llandaff Rowing Club and I could hear loads of noise, activity and cheering. It was the beginning of the annual Llandaff Raft Race. A starting gun shot and they were off. Or at least some of them were off! Some rafts found it difficult to control hence ended up actually going backwards and towards the weir. But luckily the Fire and Rescue team were there to save these people from the embarrassment of getting stuck on the weir and gave them tips on where the strong currents were and how to navigate the River Taff.
The banks of the River Taff were full of supporters cheering on the teams completing an amended course from Llandaff Rowing club upto Hailey Park and back. (Im not too sure why the Radyr starting point changed mind!)
The purpose of the event was to raise money for The Joshua Foundation – a charity created in 1998 to provide holidays and experiences for children and their families, where the child is diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Please visit their website to find out more about their fundraising activities!
More supporters packed the bridge whom came full of supplies consisting mainly of eggs and flour! Only one team had pre-empted this strike and had some sort of plastic cover over them! Most teams were struck but it was all taken in good spirit. Check out the video below for an essence of the great fun that was had by everyone.

Hundreds of spectators turned up, including Charlotte Church and her kids. A great fun day was had by all and more money raised for a worthy cause. Oh how far up the Taff Trail did I get? Ok, I confess, it WAS me that was a tad rusty so I only managed Gwaelod Y Garth and back! Onwards and upwards for next time!
