One video has become an overnight success after being Tweeted by the likes of Lily Allen and Rob Brydon, but are there any other parody tracks out there featuring Welsh places? Let’s find out!
MJ Delaney-Newport (Ymerodraeth)State of Mind
Well it seems to have taken the internet world by storm and is making headlines around the world….ok maybe as far as Cwmbran then!
This track was the brainchild of MJ Delaney featuring the vocal talents of Alex Warren and Terema Wainwright. It’s is a parody of the fantastic track by Alicia Keys ft Jay-Z-Empire State of Mind.
The lyrics have been adapted to refer to life in Newport rather than NewYork and are well funny – its like the GLC have been reborn with jibes at Gavin Henson, Craig Bellamy and Wembley Stadium!
It seems like EMI have taken it down off YouTube as it had amassed over 2.5 million hits so try the video below for their first live performance of the track at The Newport City Festival on Saturday 7th August!

Within just 2 days it has amassed over a quarter of a million hits on Youtube and over 2.5 million before it was pulled! It has been featured on ITV Wales News and ITV News website. It also featured as the ‘And Finally’ story on ITV News at Ten!
It was admitted the artists involved were not actually from Newport and so the GLC decided to create their own version of this parody – a parody of a parody! Check out the GLC version here!

Tom and Joel ft T-Stain-P-Town
Even though its not actually on YouTube this ‘CityRap’ phenomenon began a while back. Beginning with a great little video by some poets from Penarth dedicating a catchy rap song describing the minutiae of life to Wales’ second largest town – Penarth!
The track features Tom and Joel along with cameo appearances from Sarah Macleod and Rhys Topping (both of whom actually live in Penarth), as well as the vocal stylings of T-Stain too.
Tom and Joel spoke to the Penarth Times about their venture into the world of rap!
Joel, 18, said: “Tom and I turned up at Meic’s house and recorded P-Town, which I had written the lyrics for after a trip to Penarth the previous day. A lot of people seem to have missed the sarcastic nature of the song entirely and just taken it at face value. But I prefer to think of it as an affectionate parody. We do love Penarth, but a lot of the people I know who live there complain that there’s very little to do – so it’s written for them, I suppose.”
A fanpage has been set up at Facebook with loads of positive comments for the duo.
Chris Moyles and Radio 1 Team-(Bangor) State of Mind
And just for completeless next up is the Chris Moyles’ parody of the huge hit by Alicia Key-Empire State of Mind again. This time featuring all the breakfast show team but changing the lyrics to promote the Radio 1 Big Weekend in Bangor 2010. Nothing much else to add apart from that it was very popular at the time and was made BEFORE the Newport version.
