NEW Cafe open in Bute Park

Well after all the controversy over some paths and roads being improved in Cardiff’s wonderful Bute Park, it seems that a shop has now sprung up, almost out of no-where, without anyone really noticing!

A one storey structure has been built in Bute Park just opposite Sophia Gardens bridge. In this area there used to be a small structure built from stone and im sure it was used as a toilet facility for 20-30 years. It seems that some of the stone has been utilised in the new structure along with some sympathetic design in the roof and cladding.

SANY4806Personally, im not entirely sure whether this idea of bringing commercialism into a relatively unspoilt park is a great idea. Ok we get the odd ice-cream van near the stone circle in the Summer and that seems to be sufficient.

But when so much other activity is on-going in the area with new paths, roads, bridges and other buildings being constructed on the outskirts of the Bute Park area it seems a rather harsh decision to allow the building of a brand new building slap bang in the middle of it for commerical reasons aswell!

Whilst passing through this area on my way to town I have managed to capture some video of the building in the construction stages and popped down on launch day.

SANY4907The placards have been up all week advertising the Grand Opening on Saturday 29th May and so I went along. Only to discover a lot of noisy work still taking place and after such a lovely week of sunshine it decided to rain aswell!! What were the chances of that ‘appening….

Im sure this will prove to be a really useful facility for everyone and, of course, I will use it – butI still cant understand why Cardiff City Council have allowed it to happen – is this the thin end of the wedge? What next? A Witherspoons by the Royal College of Music and Drama? hmmm that not actually a bad idea actually……… ponder.
